Insomnia is a condition that is characterized by a person’s lack of sleep. Anybody can get insomnia, even children. The physical causes of insomnia are varied and have different factors.

Basically, the physical causes of insomnia are dependent on what the condition of the body is. Diseases, disorders, and conditions are a few of the outside influences that affect the health of the body. Women are supposed to be more susceptible to the physical causes of insomnia than men. The monthly hormonal shifts in women is a major factor in their susceptibility to insomnia. The menstrual cycle of women is one of the physical causes of insomnia in women everywhere. Insomnia can be experienced as a symptom of pregnancy at the point that gestation occurs. It is clear that hormones are a key player in the physical elements that provoke insomnia.

Another one of the causes of insomnia in adults is age. It is not actually age per say that causes insomnia but instead it is the reduction of the chemical melatonin as humans grow older. The reduction of the chemical melatonin (which is supposed to help induce sleep) causes less sleep in many older people as well as some difficulty in achieving sleep.

Other certain diseases, like heart disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis can be physical causes of insomnia in people who suffer from these diseases. Some illnesses do have insomnia as one of their symptoms which is why it is important to know when the sleep disorder occurred and for how long it has been happening when consulting a doctor. Injuries and bodily harm can also be the physical causes of insomnia for some people. Pain from injuries can prevent people from falling asleep as well as cause sleep interruption.

There are very straightforward solutions for all of these physical causes of insomnia. The main thing is to solve the physical problem that is causing the underlying cause of insomnia in order to resolve the result, which is insomnia. Medication and therapy can help to do this.
