Snoring is a frustrating and embarrassing problem but more than that, it’s a very unhealthy one as well.  Waking in the middle of the night, as well as disturbing the sleep of others in the house, can have multiple negative effects on your health.  Chronic snorers should consider a snoring appliance to get relief as much for them self as well as for their sleeping partner.  How does a snoring appliance offer relief from snoring and where can you get one?

Most likely you will have to get your snoring appliance from a doctor and not from your pharmacy.   It works very much like any mouth guard does. It will fit around your teeth and push your jaw slightly forward along with your tongue since it is in fact attached to the lower jaw.  The objective of an appliance for snoring is to control the position of the jaw so as to prevent the mouth from falling open which forces breathing through your nose rather than the mouth.  When you breathe through your nose you are less likely to snore.

Since the snoring appliance fits so closely around your jaw and your mouth it’s something that needs to be fitted by your doctor.  A mold or fitting of your mouth will usually be taken and the appliance will be designed to fit you personally .   Using a snoring appliance that doesn’t fit properly will mean that it’s too lose and won’t work to keep your jaw aligned or it will be too tight and uncomfortable.  These aren’t like clothes where a bit of room here and there is fine; it’s something that needs to fit your perfectly.

You need to contact your insurance company to see if a snoring appliance is covered by your plan,  if not this still may be an option for you.  Those who snore will find that there is a lot of damage that can be done to their bodies. Permanent damage to the throat and mouth is possible when there is constant snoring. Snoring can also lead to fatigue and other health problems, as well as falling asleep at the wrong times.
Certainly if a small device like a snoring appliance can help you to get to sleep and preserve your health then it’s worth the expense.  And why not discuss this with your physician and get their suggestions?
